This process will support you to achieve Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for the following units which are pre-requisites for the Swim Teacher extension courses.

SISCAQU024 Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills SISCAQU025 Teach water safety and survival skills

    What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) means an assessment process that assesses the competency/s of an individual that may have been acquired through formal, non-formal and informal learning tobdetermine the extent to which that individual meets the requirements against a unit/s of competency.

    Overview

Why do I need to complete RPL to enrol in the Infants and Toddlers or All Abilities courses?

Both units SISCAQU027 Promote development of infants and toddlers in an aquatic environment and SISCAQU028 - Assist participants with disability during aquatic activities specify SISCAQU024 Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills and SISCAQU025 Teach water safety and survival skills as pre-requisite units.

This means that students must hold these two units before they can complete the Infants and Toddlers or All Abilities units.

If you completed your Swim Teacher training in 2024 or later, you will already hold these units. The need to complete the two pre-requisite units via the RPL process is applicable to individuals who completed their training in 2023 or earlier years as they would not have completed these units as part of their training. This is because the current training package has implemented new versions of the units which are not equivalent to the previous versions. Simply put, the learning outcomes are different.

What should experienced Swim Teachers do?

The RPL pathway is an assessment process which acknowledges your existing knowledge and skill. It requires you to collate specific information which will help an assessor determine that you possess the knowledge and skill against the two current units. You will then be awarded the two pre-requisite units to enable you to enrol in the Infants and Toddlers and All Abilities courses.

How does the RPL process work?

Candidates who elect to undertake a RPL pathway must provide applicable evidence which confirms the currency of their knowledge and skill against each unit of competency.

The RPL process involves the collection of various forms of evidence which assist the assessor in determining that the candidate possesses the current knowledge and skill as outlined in the applicable unit of competency. Examples include:

    • Formal qualifications
    • Professional development
    • Current licences and approvals
    • Declarations and confirmation of workplace application from current or past employers
    • Workplace documents
    • Verbal evidence

Further detail on workplace evidence is outlined on page 2 of this document.

Why is there a fee for RPL?

RPL is a form of assessment which means that an assessor must review the submitted workplace evidence, have a conversation with you to collect additional evidence and speak with your referee. The fee also includes the administration of this enrolment and issuing a Statement of Attainment for the units for successful candidates.

    Certification:

On successfully completing the RPL process, a Statement of Attainment for SISCAQU024 Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills and SISCAQU025 Teach water safety and survival skills will be issued. Please allow up to 10 working days to receive your certificate upon successful completion of the course.
