Australian Lifeguards are world-renowned for their high levels of skill and knowledge in accident prevention and rescue response.
This course will provide participants with skills and knowledge in accident prevention, first aid, administration, public relations, education, scanning, communications, basic and advanced water rescues.

Royal Life Saving and the Department of Training and Workforce Development are working together to offer the free Pool Lifeguard Skill Set training to eligible participants.
Students must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for the free course.
If you are enrolled in school and it is not during school holiday time periods as stated below you are not eligible even if you meet another criteria.
To be eligible to access the free course, students must be unemployed or under-employed and able to access mainstream training. Full time employees are not eligible for this training.
To be eligible for free training, reduced-fee qualifications or a subsidised training place, you must have left school*, reside primarily in Western Australia, and hold Australian citizenship, permanent residency, or one of the visa subclasses listed below:
- Specific Visa Subclasses: 300, 309, 444, 445, 461, 785, 790, or 820.
- Secondary Temporary Visa Holders: Subclass 188, 457, 482, 489, 491, or 494.
- Bridging Visa E (050 and 051): If you've applied for a subclass 785 or 790 visa.
- Ukraine Citizens: Holders of visa subclass 449 or 786.
- Afghan Citizens: Holders of visa subclass 449.
- Bridging Visa Holders with Work Rights: If you've applied for a subclass 866 visa.
*School students are eligible if they begin and complete the course during school holidays. Please note that this must align with the term dates for public schools in Western Australia.
First Nations people, young people, people out of work or receiving income support, unpaid carers, people with disability, and women facing economic insecurity are particularly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity for fee free training.
Please note that existing worker trainees are not eligible for the fee-free arrangements.
Students will start the course with online learning via our eLearning portal. There is pre-reading, online learning modules and knowledge-based assessments prior to joining a classroom session. This will ensure students have the required knowledge and understanding before progressing to the practical application and assessment in the classroom.
Course duration and delivery:
Online training and assessment (approximately 16 hours) plus 4 days (30 hours) face-to-face training and assessment.
Price: $370 (if not eligible for free skill set)
Pre-requisites:
- The fitness , strength, efficiency and speed to swim 25m, tow a person 25m and remove a patient from the water without assistance
- English proficiency to work through course resources and instruction
- Minimum age 16
- Access to a computer and the internet to access the eLearning portal prior to participating in the face-to-face training.
Certification: On successfully completing the 4-day Pool Lifeguard assessment requirements, a Statement of Attainment for the following units of competence will be issued:
- HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid
- SISCAQU019 - Supervise patron safety in aquatic locations
- SISCAQU020 - Perform water rescues
- SISCAQU021 - Perform advanced water rescues
- SISCAQU022 - Provide oxygen resuscitation and therapy in an aquatic environment
Please allow up to 10 working days to receive your certificate upon successful completion of the course.
International Students: Please note that Royal Life Saving WA is not registered on CRICOS, we are therefore unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa. By enrolling in this course, you are declaring you are not an overseas student holding a student visa.
