Overview
Each year in Australia, an average of four people fatally drown in public swimming pools. In addition, Royal Life Saving research indicates that pool lifeguards perform approximately 7,800 rescues and respond to more than 14,000 major incidents annually. Among these are an estimated 25 non-fatal drownings - serious events that can result in life-long impacts and may have led to fatal outcomes without timely intervention.
These figures highlight the critical role lifeguards play in preventing tragedy and the importance of systems that support early detection and rapid response.
Drowning detection systems, including those powered by AI, are increasingly becoming a critical tool in the mix. With careful implementation they can enhance aquatic safety, complementing supervision and emergency response practices. Developing the skills to work confidently and effectively with these systems will be essential for both lifeguards and facility leadership teams.
