Developed by leading Behaviour Support Specialists, Occupational Therapists, and Exercise Physiologists, Autism Swim offers learning modules and a world-first certification to empower aquatic providers with the knowledge, skills, resources, and confidence to deliver truly inclusive aquatic programs.
This Introductory Bundle contains 3 modules:
Module 1: Communication
- Understanding varying communication styles and preferences
- Understand the different between receptive and expressive communication
- Identify strategies to promote successful communication before, during and after aquatic activities
- Utilise respectful and empowering communication when working with swimmers who have limited verbalisations
- Understand how, when and why to use visual supports in swimming lessons to ensure positive aquatic experiences
Module 2: Behaviour Support
- Understand that all behaviour is functional
- Understand the four functions of behaviour
- Identify and gather information relating to participant behaviour needs
- Identify and gather data to assist with understanding behaviours
- Acknowledge and explain the reasons why punishment is not an effective behaviour support strategy
- Utilise positive behaviour support strategies when responding to behaviours
- Understand task analysis and how changing levels of assistance can be a measure of progress
- Identify strategies to motivate participants, teach new skills and to reduce behaviours of concern during aquatics
Module 3: Neurodiversity and Aquatics
- Explain the physical, cognitive, social and emotional benefits of swimming and aquatic programs
- Acknowledge the increased drowning statistics for participants on the autism spectrum and other Neurodiverse participants, and some of the associated reasons why
- Identify and use relevant swimming aids and sensory tools during aquatic sessions
- Identify when and when not to use flotation devices during aquatic sessions to promote independence
- Utilise enrolment forms and initial assessment processes appropriate for Neurodiverse participants
