    The Swim Teacher by Royal Life Saving course equips students with the skills, knowledge, and qualifications to plan and teach swimming and water safety programs.

    Royal Life Saving and the Department of Training and Workforce Development are working together to offer the free Pool Lifeguard Skill Set training to eligible participants.

    Students must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for free course.

    If you are enrolled in school and it is not during school holiday time periods as stated below you are not eligible even if you meet another criteria.

    To be eligible to access the free course, students must be unemployed or under-employed and able to access mainstream training. Full time employees are not eligible for this training.

    To be eligible for free training, reduced-fee qualifications or a subsidised training place; you must have left school*, have your primary place of residence in Western Australia, and are either:
    - an Australian citizen; or
    - a permanent visa holder or holder of visa subclass 309, 444, 449, 785, 786, 790, or 820; or
    - a dependent or spouse of the primary holder of a visa subclass 457 or 482; or
    - a bridging visa holder who has made a valid application for a visa subclass 866; or
    - a bridging visa E holder (subclasses 050 and 051) who has made a valid application for a visa subclass 785 or 790

    *In 2023, Year 12 school students who are leaving school can access a subsidised training place from 23 October 2023. School students are eligible if they begin and complete the course during school holidays.

    First Nations people, young people, people out of work or receiving income support, unpaid carers, people with disability, and women facing economic insecurity are particularly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity for fee free training.

    Please note that existing worker trainees are not eligible for the fee-free arrangements.


    Course overview:Students will start the course with online learning via our eLearning portal. There is pre-reading, online learning modules and knowledge-based assessments prior to joining a classroom session. This will ensure students have the required knowledge and understanding before progressing to the practical application and assessment in the classroom.

    Course duration and delivery:
    Online training and assessment (approximately 10 hours) plus 4 days (30 hours) face-to-face training and assessment.

    Price: $360 (if not eligible for free skill set)

    Pre-requisites:
    - An understanding of all swimming strokes, the fitness and strength to tow a person 10m and remove from the water without assistance, English proficiency to work through course resources and instruction.
    - Minimum age 17 - you may enrol in the Swim Teacher course at 16 years and 9 months of age but are not eligible to receive your Licence/Accreditation until you are 17 years of age.
    - Access to a computer and the internet to access the eLearning portal prior to participating in the face-to-face training.

    Certification: On successfully completing this skill set, a Statement of Attainment for the following units of competence will be issued:

    • SISCAQU020 Perform water rescues
    • SISCAQU023 Plan swimming lessons
    • SISCAQU024 Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
    • SISCAQU025 Teach water safety and survival skills
    • SISCAQU026 Teach swimming strokes

    Please allow up to 10 working days to receive your certificate upon successful completion of the course.

    On successfully completing the Swim Teacher Licence requirements, Royal Life Saving will issue a Swimming Teacher Licence.

    International Students: Please note that Royal Life Saving WA is not registered on CRICOS, we are therefore unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa. By enrolling in this course, you are declaring you are not an overseas student holding a student visa.
