
Swim Teacher Licence Renewal 2025-2026

The Swimming and Water Safety Teacher licence is valid for one year from the date of issue. Swimming and Water Safety Teachers are required to maintain their industry licence through a renewal application process.

Overview
The requalification of your Swim Teacher licence is an annual requirement. These components are from the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations.
Updating your Industry Licence affirms your commitment to maintain currency in safety, ongoing professional development, industry standards of practice and behavioural guidelines.
We encourage you to submit all requirements before the expiry date so that you maintain continuity of accreditation. On approval of your accreditation application, you will receive a copy of your Industry Licence and Royal Life Saving WA membership.
Licence Renewal Requirements:
1. Current CPR Qualification
A copy of your current HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate.

2. Valid Working With Children Check
Your WWC Card is valid for three years and it is recommended you renew it at least one month prior to expiration. Apply for, or renew, your WWCC here.
3. Verification of aquatic rescue ability
The following awards will be accepted for verification of your aquatic rescue ability:
- Bronze Medallion (or Bronze Star/Bronze Cross)
- Aquatic Rescue
- Swimming Instructor Rescue Award
- Pool Lifeguard
- Water Rescue Training Certificate signed by your manager
4. Professional Development
When renewing your licence, you must provide evidence of professional development completed within the past 12 months, covering both water safety and teaching techniques. Sessions undertaken through external organisations will be reviewed individually for relevance and quality. A certificate of completion and a brief summary of each session must be submitted for review.
Minimum PD Requirements:
The professional development options listed below offer flexibility to choose PD activities that align with your goals, interests, and teaching needs. Our aim is to encourage, support, and guide your ongoing professional growth.
(a) Completion of four online Royal Life Saving eLearning modules:
- Royal Life Saving PDs
- Other industry-recognised PDs (Certificate of completion required)
(b) Attendance at a recognised industry event, such as:
- LIWA Aquatics Conference
- The Royal Splash
- Other industry-recognised in-person full day conferences, seminars or workshops (Certificate of attendance required)
(c) Completion of intensive industry-recognised online courses
Industry-recognised extended online learning such as World Wide Swim School or Autism Swim (Certificate of completion required). This can include but is not limited to:
- Infants and Toddler pack
- Adapted aquatics pack
- Stroke correction pack
- Certifications
(d) Participation in a half-day session or event
Participation in a half-day session (minimum three hours of active involvement) will be recognised as equivalent to two professional development units.
(e) Completion of a nationally-recognised unit of competency (an extension unit to your initial skill set)
- SISCAQU027 - Promote development of infants and toddlers in an aquatic environment
- SISCAQU028 - Assist participants with disability during aquatic activities
